How to manage your overwhelming thoughts

Feeling overwhelmed? I understand, I have been there. I just want to tell you that we have to start saying no.

It is so important that we take a step back and we start to reassess our lives. We need to start saying no to things and people, and even our energy, we have to start saying no to when it starts boiling up and it gets a bit too much.

I find when I'm overwhelmed, I stop doing things because I have too much on my plate. There's too much responsibility, too much going on. I don't want to do it anymore. And then I get overwhelmed with that thought. And it's just another overwhelming cycle of never-ending overwhelm.

I have a few tips about how I've managed to take a little bit more control of the way I think, act, and feel when I’m overwhelmed.

Overwhelm tries to get through my life. I used to get so overwhelmed going to Coles. It's Coles, we're talking grocery shopping. I used to get so overwhelmed, and anxious going in there since the pandemic broke out. And I had to take a step back and think “All right, Sarah, what is the alternative?”

“What is one thing that we can do to take away this overwhelming stress that you've got to do once a week?”

We do not need that in our life. What can we do about it?

Removing decisions

For example, removing decisions in your life. I decided to sign up for hello fresh, and it has been the best thing ever because the meals are easy. They deliver it to your door on a Saturday morning. And I don't have to think about it. I don't have to think about what I'm cooking. I just have to select the meals and it's prepared for me. And I just have to put it on the stove and I don't have to go into this overwhelming pool of people trying to pick and think and get out of there in a real quick time.

It's just one thing that has immensely changed the way I feel each week.

Moving your body

Another thing that has helped me when I feel overwhelmed in my business is I have started going back to Pilates and I joined the gym. And then I come back home and I feel amazing for the rest of the day.

So that was another thing that I sat with myself and thought, okay, how can I remove that overwhelming feeling? I need to stop for a second and I need to actually move my body.

Recognising and removing triggers

Anytime I felt triggered and stressed and overwhelmed by a post or a story instantly, I would delete it because I am already overwhelmed in my life.

I don't need to have all these other energies and people and things constantly reminding me of how crappy the world is. So that is a huge thing that both I and my partner have actually cut out in our lives and it's helped us so much. And the thing is we will be notified by family and close friends if it's really important.

Surround yourself with positive people

If life is overwhelming you, it is so important that we start to surround ourselves with more positive influences in our life.

Start to cut out toxic people, negative friendships, negative people in general, or anyone that made you feel negative, any sort of bad emotion that you did not want to feel.

I have had to cut out a few negative toxic friendships that were holding me back and making me feel overwhelmed without realizing I was feeling overwhelmed.

Know your limit to social media

I used to scroll and keep up with everyone's lives. I had to stop and ask myself, okay, Sarah, you're feeling overwhelmed. What can we do here? So, what I've decided to do now is I don't scroll anymore.

I only go on social media now with the intention of posting for my community. You, beautiful people reading this blog post, a message that is going to help encourage you and motivate you and lift you up and give you a bit of sparkle on your cake. That is my intention now.

So, I don't scroll just for the point of scrolling anymore.

Those are the things that I've had to stop doing and removing out of my life. And it has helped so much.

Remove distractions

Another tip is to turn off my notifications on my phone. This has been a big help in my business and in my personal life as well. I am more present now with the people that I spend time with.

So, I don't have any notifications on my phone. It's been so nice waking up in the morning and seeing a photo of my dog on my home screen.

When you cut out the little things that are not necessary for your life, you start to focus on your actual life. You start to focus on how you want to feel, how you want to show up.
